Middle River Recreation Activity Center

Located on a 14-acre site in Middle River, this new Recreation Activity Center will provide athletic, educational, social, and health programs for residents of all ages.  Serving a densely populated area, the 15,000-SF community center will feature a full-size gymnasium, multipurpose rooms, and outdoor recreation areas.  The RAC plans to provide arts and athletic activities, after-school programs, and well-being services.  Carroll Engineering provided full structural, civil, and landscape architectural services for construction of the single-story, pre-engineered metal building, which is expected to open in April 2024.  Designs included a steel superstructure with brick and masonry façade, coordination with Baltimore County for permitting, and universally accessible routes connecting to outdoor spaces and the adjacent Glenmar Elementary School.

Highlights

  • Structural building designs included a steel superstructure with tapered, wide-flange beams and columns, and z-purlins with metal deck. The building is founded on isolated spread footings.
  • Site designs for the 40,000-SF AOD included micro-bioretention areas and modular wetlands systems to satisfy stormwater management requirements without sacrificing outdoor space.
  • LA plans included a Forest Stand Delineation, site planning and building orientation, and tree plantings and hardscaping at front entrance, parking area, and perimeter.
  • The project is expected to achieve LEED Platinum certification.
