Ocean City Convention Center

Opened in 1970, the Ocean City Convention Center provides more than 200,000 SF of event and exhibition space. Equipped with performing arts facilities, ballrooms, dining areas, and multiple exhibit halls, the convention center’s latest expansion includes a 30,000-SF addition and site improvements. The new space features a 14,000-SF exhibit hall and a 13,600-SF bayfront ballroom with panoramic views. Working within a disturbed area of approximately 4 acres, CEI prepared designs for new sidewalks, replacement of multiple wooden boardwalks, and modifications to the existing loading dock to provide easier truck access. Designs also included resurfacing of an existing visitors parking lot, reconfiguration of the existing main entrance drive, installation of a new parking area, and upgrades to ADA accessibility and parking. Carroll Engineering prepared full civil designs for the multi-phased project, which enhanced pedestrian and vehicular circulation on-site, provided additional parking, and increased the venue’s exhibit space to 90,000 SF.

Highlights

  • Site designs included coordination with the Town of Ocean City and MDE for stormwater management and erosion/sediment control site plans review, as well as coordination with MDE for a federal NPDES permit with NOI.
  • The site is located partially in a FEMA designated floodplain with portions designated as wetlands. CEI provided wetlands mitigation and same-day stabilization for portions of the demolition work in proximity to wetlands and open water.
  • To meet reduced impervious area without sacrificing usable space, we designed new sidewalks consisting of pervious pavers over a stone basin to provide runoff storage and treatment.
