Opened to students in January 2020, the new Bay-Brook Elementary/Middle School is a $33.5 million state-of-the-art, 21st Century facility designed to combine two existing programs into one school. The 3-story building accommodates 800 students in a modern, collaborative educational environment with innovative classrooms and technology labs, recreation space, administrative offices, and community areas. Working on a nearly 11-acre site, CEI prepared plans to increase security and facilitate opportunities for interactive outdoor education and recreation. The site features three distinct play areas separated by age appropriateness, a communal athletic field, and an outdoor education area. CEI provided full civil designs for the new construction project, which achieved LEED Silver certification.
Highlights
- Site designs included extensive phasing, regrading and utility work, including the installation of a tall, temporary retaining wall to allow the existing school to maintain operations during construction of the new building. Several major pass-through utilities required relocation. CEI worked with the city to obtain a Developer’s Agreement for those and for connections to city mains and work in the public right-of-way.
- In order to maintain student safety, our team designed a central school entrance with separate parent and bus drop-off areas, as well as universally accessible pedestrian routes around the building and site.
- Designs for outdoor play and education areas included playground infrastructure, fencing, and retaining walls. We used additional open, green spaces to optimize stormwater management and environmental site design.
