Northwood Commons

The $50 million Northwood Commons development is a long-anticipated project to demolish and replace the deteriorated Northwood Plaza Shopping Center adjacent to Morgan State University. Anchored by a 35,000-SF Lidl and an 11,000-SF Barnes & Noble with an MSU-themed cafe, the new shopping center brings 120,000 SF of retail, restaurant, office, and lifestyle space to this growing campus community. Carroll Engineering designed four retail buildings and the state-of-the-art MSU Public Safety Building, home of campus security, which is also located on-site. The retail buildings will house tenants such as Chipotle, IHOP, and a 2-story Barnes & Noble. Designs included steel framing, shallow spread footings, glass storefronts, and canopies. CEI provided full structural designs for the development, which is expected to open in 2022.

Highlights

  • Building structural designs included steel-framed structures with shallow spread footings, brick and metal veneer, and concrete slab-on-grade flooring.
  • The MSU Public Safety building features a 16-foot lower-level concrete retaining wall to create a partial basement.
