SHA & MdTA Salt Storage Facilities

Carroll Engineering has worked with the Maryland State Highway Administration and the Maryland Transportation Authority to provide civil, structural, and landscape services on a variety of projects and on-call task orders at multiple salt storage facilities throughout the state. Our team has provided new construction designs, assessments, and repair services at 40 salt barns throughout Maryland, including recent projects for new salt barns at Connecticut Avenue in Montgomery County, Moravia Road in Baltimore City, and at the State Highway facility in Frederick County. Ranging in size from 3,000-ton to 10,000-ton capacity storage facilities, typical designs followed state prototypes of pre-engineered wood framing with concrete foundations. The project sites, which spanned the state from Cecil County to Garrett County, required coordination with multiple state and local agencies for plans review.

Highlights

  • The storage facilities range in capacity from 3,000 tons to 10,000 tons.
  • Working on sites in various locations, our civil team coordinated with MDE and the Chesapeake Bay Critical Area Commission for permitting and plans review.
  • Typical designs included structural framing and foundations, site circulation, grading, parking, truck and vehicular access, wetlands considerations, and equipment pads.
