CEI reviewed the capacity of the existing roof framing to safely support the proposed added load of solar panels. Based on the structural member sizes shown on the existing drawings, the roof appeared to have a total capacity between 60 and 65 psf through the flat portion where the panels were proposed. The added weight of the panel assembly, based on the proposed spacing as shown on the above sketch was calculated as 2.87 psf. Based on the information provided, our report contained a preliminary opinion that the roof can safely support the proposed solar panels in those areas not affected by snow drift. As a practical matter, we also specified that the panels shall be held a minimum of 8 feet back from the roof elevation change at column line 8 on the low side.
