CEI completed structural upgrade designs to form a magnet school for medical research & development studies. Johns Hopkins Hospital, which is located two blocks from the facility, supplied research equipment and instructors to assist in course curriculum. Our structural services included studying two basic structural alternatives to redevelop the interior spaces and upgrade the facility to IBC and ADA code requirements. CEI prepared schematic narratives to support the two approaches: columns to ground and column-free cantilever framing. Based on economics and BCPS' needs, a series of structural perimeter additions totaling 32,000 square feet of area was designed. The additions were designed as column free, maintaining a "clear" ground level for pedestrian circulation through the site. CEI also designed two elevator shafts, front entrance lobby area, curtain exterior wall, dining area, enlarged classrooms, concrete handicap accessible ramp and aluminum canopy structure.
