UMBC Patapsco Hall Addition
Site: Southeast Campus Area
Client: University of Maryland Baltimore County
Location: Baltimore County, MD
Reacting to predictions of serious enrollment increases, the University of Maryland Baltimore County unveiled in 2009 aspirations for several major growth projects. CEI provided civil engineering designs for the expansion of Patapsco Hall, a four-story on-campus dormitory. Under an aggressive 20-month design/build schedule, our team completed plans to increase space at UMBC with a 189-bed, 57,000 gross-square-foot addition. Patapsco Hall now houses 340 residents. Civil/site improvements also extended to the two-acre central quad area, where CEI provided new walkways, new plaza areas, and a new basketball and sand volleyball courts. Working closely with design team members, as well as UMBC and KBE Builders, CEI promptly offered plans for necessary site infrastructure in order to keep the project running on its tight schedule. By dividing all work into three areas and issuing three Guaranteed Maximum Price packages, CEI was able to maintain efficiency in the permtting and construction schedules. The Patapsco Hall project was one of the first to receive MDE approval under the latest MDE/ESD regulations.
