CCBC - Catonsville Campus Learning Resource Center

Site:  South-Central Catonsville Campus Area
Client:   The Community College of Baltimore County
Location:  Baltimore County, MD

In 2004, the CCBC Catonsville Campus unveiled its Master Plan Update, in which the signature project was an ambitious proposal for a learning resource building. CCBC called on CEI to provide civil/site and landscape architectural plans for what is now the Catonsville Learning Resource Center, a three-story, 75,500 square-foot library facility. The center stands on a site that once held Parking Lot 8 and several modular classrooms, which required innovative and adaptive designs. During the schmatic phase, CEI adjusted the facility footprint to ensure the efficient removal of pavement - approximately 25% within the area of disturbance - in order to satisfy Baltimore County stormwater management requirements. Our staff also designed grading, walkways, plaza pavers, a handicap accessible ramp, a 175-space reconfigured surface parking lot, outdoor plantings and 4-phase erosion & sediment control plans. CEI also performed utility services, including designs to efficiently run steam/condensate lines from the Energy Plant to the resource center. The college hoped that construction could begin directly following Governor O'Malley's dedication visit, and CEI made this possible by coordinating with Baltimore County permitting and the Baltimore County Soils District to receive timely approval for the project.
